Threads of Heritage: Bringing the “Zasmyk” Embroidery Back to Life

Liudmyla Nadiievets, a technology and arts teacher at Svarytsevychy Lyceum in the Rivne region, is implementing the project Threads of Heritage: Bringing the “Zasmyk” Embroidery Back to Life.

Her initiative returns to children knowledge that has been preserved by older generations and helps students experience authentic Polissia traditions through hands-on practice.

Students learn the “zasmyk” embroidery technique, explore local ornaments, colors, and symbols, and eventually create full elements of a traditional embroidered shirt.

These activities foster focus, patience, and creativity, while giving students a strong sense of connection to their own history and community.

It is through initiatives like this that cultural memory is restored and what must not be lost is passed on to the next generation.
